Harper's Young People is an illustrated weekly publication for children that includes short stories, tales from history, natural history, poetry, puzzles, and other entertainment. This 44th issue of the serial was published on August 31st, 1880. In this issue, "The Moral Pirates" story continues and finds the pirates cold and lost on the foggy lake at night while trying to make their way back to their island campsite. Also in this issue, young Claudine's family struggles to survive a battle in the streets outside their Paris home and the young girl must sacrifice her beloved pets in order to save them in "Claudine's Doves"; in "Jed's First Hale", a boy is hired to drive a cow across country and hopes it will help him achieve his 4th of July dreams; readers can meet and learn about some amazing wild animals in "Some Inhabitants of Africa".
