Very well read by the volunteer. Decent prose, does not get in its own way. Procedural more than puzzle, it is early form of what had taken over detective fiction in modern times. This points up the contrasts between them and now. First, the conventions of polite speech give us a break from the harsh vulgarity in today's novel that aim at gritty realism. score one for the old days. However, the conceitedness of science in those days comes out when groundless cultural generalizations and demeaning ethnic stereotypes are treated as self evident, common knowledge facts. Score three for modern times finding those things embarrassing. I keep reading these Victorian era dime novels not because I agree with those chauvinistic viewpoints, but because they provide snapshots of the popular culture of that period. It would be nice to think the progress in society since then is permanent, but with the condition of discourse on social media, one is left in doubt.

Very interesting stories! The police always seem to get it wrong, but Thorndyke clears it up every time! the reader did an excellent job, as well. Very clear, and she used different voices for the different characters.

Dr John Thorndyke & his ability tying in the sciences in criminal cases was the CIA, FBI, NCIS, bringing the worst dregs to their convictions. R Austin Freeman was so ahead of his time with the sciences, noting they were using horse drawn coaches as taxi cabs. I do wonder if investigators really used any similar techniques in their criminal cases. Great Reading....
