Command Performance
Broadway Edition
von
Command Performance was a variety program created to entertain members of the U.S. armed forces during World War II. Its broadcasts brought together popular performers from film, radio, and music, with each edition offering a mix of comedy, songs, and other stage-style entertainment.
The program’s appeal lies in its changing lineup: familiar entertainers share the microphone, and musical numbers sit alongside comic performances and other variety acts. The “Broadway Edition” framing points to a theater-centered selection of entertainment, presented as a special program rather than a continuing dramatic story.
Warm, lively, and shaped by the performers’ personalities, Command Performance offers a snapshot of wartime radio variety. Its blend of music and comedy makes for an accessible listen, while the program’s service-oriented purpose gives the entertainment a distinctive historical setting.
