Have Gun – Will Travel follows Paladin, a highly educated and principled gun-for-hire who operates from San Francisco’s Hotel Carlton. Though he carries a gun and accepts payment for dangerous work, Paladin is guided by a personal code and often seeks a solution that avoids needless violence. His business card bears the image of a chess knight and the words “Have Gun – Will Travel,” a concise statement of his unusual profession.
The radio series brings listeners into Paladin’s world through self-contained Western adventures, as clients seek his help with disputes, threats, and difficult journeys. Episodes combine frontier action with negotiation and moral choices, giving Paladin room to rely on intelligence and judgment as well as marksmanship. His exchanges with people he meets reveal the varied pressures of life in the Old West.
Measured and thoughtful rather than simply action-driven, the program balances suspense with questions of fairness, responsibility, and the cost of violence. Paladin’s calm manner and distinctive code give the stories a reflective edge, while the Western setting supplies danger and movement. This recording is titled “Hey Boy’s Revenge.”
This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.
