Reading Europe Greece The Final Reckoning

The Final Reckoning is a gripping drama written by Petros Markaris, one of Greece's most popular writers. Set in Greece in 2008, just before the elections that will bring Tsipras to power, this cleverly disguised police procedural delves beneath the headlines to expose a nation in both moral and financial crisis.

The story begins with the tragic quadruple suicide of four elderly women, friends who can no longer see a way to survive in a country where poverty is a government policy. Their deaths spark public outrage, leading to a series of murders among Athens' wealthy elite. Inspector Kosta Jaritos, a former military police officer haunted by his past, finds himself at the center of this turmoil as he grapples with the implications of his previous actions during Greece's dictatorship.

This drama, produced by Big Fish for BBC Radio 4, is presented in two parts, featuring a talented cast including Philip Jackson, Pamela Miles, and Jane Slavin.
