The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner
Alan Sillitoe
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is a powerful dramatization of Alan Sillitoe's landmark short story, adapted by Robert Rigby. Set in the late 1950s, it follows Borstal boy Smith as he reflects on his past crimes while training for a national cross-country event. The governor believes that athletic success will reform Smith, but the young man grapples with his identity and the societal divisions around him.
First published in 1959, this story is both tough and bleakly comic, capturing the struggles of a seventeen-year-old inmate who is caught between the expectations of the system and his own rebellious spirit. The production, a Goldhawk Essential for BBC Radio 4 Drama, was first broadcast on August 27, 2016.
This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.
