Henrik Ibsen A Doll's House
Henrik Ibsen
A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen, translated from the Norwegian by Michael Meyer, was first performed at the Royal Theatre, Copenhagen, on 21 December 1879. The play's message—that marriage is not sacrosanct, that man's authority in his home should not go unchallenged, and that the prime duty of anyone is to find out who he or she really is and to become that person—is almost as explosive today as it was over 100 years ago.
This new production, directed by John Tydeman, celebrates the centenary of its world premiere. The cast includes Ian McKellen as Torvald Helmer, Susan Fleetwood as Nora, Sheila Reid as Mrs. Linde, David Buck as Nils Krogstad, Michael Gough as Dr. Rank, Joan Matheson as Anne-Marie, the nanny, and Josie Kidd as Helen, a maid.
First broadcast on 20 December 1979 at 20:00 on BBC Radio 3, this adaptation brings Ibsen's timeless themes to a new audience.
