Liz Lochhead Maleficium
Afternoon Play: Maleficium Wed 28th Mar 2001, 14:15 on BBC Radio 4 FM Witches, curses and spells are the ingredients of Liz Lochhead's drama. Taking its title from the word for a malicious act of witchcraft - Maleficium, the play draws on real accounts of witches' trials and confessions to create voices for three imaginary characters - Alice, Margery and Jinnet-afarm hand, a housewife and an elderly "cunningwoman". Two of them are brought to tragedy when they are accused of witchcraft by the third. The story explores the historical debate about the existence of witches, balancing-the women's voices with the coldly rational voice of the Skeptick and the imagined voice of the devil himself. Director Rob Ketteridge Starring Clare Corbett as Alice, Siobhan Redmond as Margery, Freda Dowie as Jinnet and Jon Glover as The Skeptick, Willem Ladd. Maleficium (plural: maleficia) as a Latin term, "An act of witchcraft performed with the intention of causing damage or injury; the resultant harm." In general, the term applies to any magical act intended to cause harm or death to people or property.
