The Road, The House

4

The Road, The House is a philosophical tragedy commissioned by BBC Radio 4 to celebrate the 60th birthday of playwright Howard Barker. Set in a violent 16th-century Europe, the story follows a wealthy aristocratic lady who persuades a traveling scholar to commit a terrible crime.

The play features Johannes Aventinus, a real-life humanist, as he embarks on a journey home to see his newborn child. Along the way, he encounters challenges that force him to confront the nature of scholarship, power, and human motivation. With rich language and philosophical twists, this work is not for the faint of heart, as it delves into complex themes without offering easy answers.
