The Road, The House
The Road, The House is a philosophical tragedy commissioned by BBC Radio 4 to celebrate the 60th birthday of playwright Howard Barker. Set in a violent 16th-century Europe, the story follows a wealthy aristocratic lady who persuades a traveling scholar to commit a terrible crime.
The play features Johannes Aventinus, a real-life humanist, as he embarks on a journey home to see his newborn child. Along the way, he encounters challenges that force him to confront the nature of scholarship, power, and human motivation.
