It was VE-Day, the long-awaited moment when the Allied forces triumphed over Nazi Germany to claim victory in Europe. But the joy brought by news of peace was dampened by the memory of fallen comrades and the ongoing war in the Pacific. Victory Day in Europe was long awaited. Canadians at home and abroad celebrated the end of the Second World War. During the nearly 5.5 years of the Second World War, over one million Canadians served in the North Atlantic Ocean, Italy, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, France, and Germany. One in eleven Canadians had participated and 42,000 were killed (22,917 in the army,17,101 in the Air Force, and 2,024 in the Navy). It was a long, arduous war whose end was long awaited. When Victory in Europe Day (VE-Day) was declared on May 8, 1945, excited celebrations spilled into streets and neighbourhoods throughout the world. https://jemesouviens.org/en/ve-day/ Gerald Noxon Canadian born author of more than 40 radio plays, educated at Cambridge, he worked in films for John Grierson and others in the UK and at the NFB in Canada.
