A Capital Case Holmes Meets Karl Marx

(4.2 Sterne; 21 Bewertungen)

The Friday Play: A Capital Case is a wacky and ingenious detective drama that brings together two iconic figures: Sherlock Holmes and Karl Marx. In this unique story, Holmes receives a peculiar request from Mr. Marx, who seeks his help in recovering his stolen revolutionary tract, Das Kapital.

Directed by Peter Kavanagh, this engaging play features a talented cast including Robert Bathurst as Holmes, David de Keyser as Karl Marx, and Jasmine Hyde as Eleanor. Tune in to experience this delightful blend of history and mystery.

While trying to solve a case involving both Karl Marx and the anarchist Bakunin, Sherlock Holmes struggles with Schopenhauer’s philosophy of the world as appearance. If you think that sounds funny you may like this play. It is quite clever and very silly (“dialectical poker” sounds like fun) with some decent gags on surplus value. I enjoyed Holmes’ confession: “I have been naïve. I haven’t been subjective enough” as he contrasts Schopenhauer’s ideas with Marxist “objectivity”. At least, I think that was the joke. Underpinning this daft case is, surprisingly, quite a serious and topical point – the freedom of speech for those like Marx and Bakunin. Perhaps not to everyone’s taste but “wacky and ingenious” worked for me. Thank you Radioannouncer.

Capital indeed

It's good. Reflections and an introspective take on Holmes. Did feel that some parts of the story was lost as a radio broadcast, and better acted or shown on a stage as a production. Thanks to these men's ideas, Engels, Marx, it was later shown that even when flawed, capital, is better. Very good acting, but not much of a mystery here.

Just fabulous

What a splendid performance by the entire cast. Interesting historical figures and concepts meshed and contrasted with the cool logic of Sherlock Holmes makes for compelling listening.
