Billie Holiday 1946-4-24 Embassy Theater Los Angeles, CA
Billie Holiday
This Billie Holiday show is from a live radio broadcast at The Embassy Theater in Los Angeles, CA on April 24, 1946. The recording was acquired during the collector's rounds in the early 1990s. A bad hum was removed using Sound Forge, and all noise that could be eliminated without damaging the music has been addressed. A light EQ job helped to brighten up the overall recording, and a few glitches were taken out.
Billie Holiday is an important American artist, and preserving performances like this is essential. The setlist includes:
- Body And Soul
- Strange Fruit
- Traveling Light
- He's Funny That Way
- The Man I Love
- All Of Me
- Gee Baby Ain't I Good To You
- Billie's Blues
This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.

"More than just contemporaries, Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday were mutual admirers who pushed each other musically." (NYT Oct 19, 2015) You can't hear Lady Day without thinking of Sinatra, and vice versa. That impeccable phrasing, drawing-out of syllables -- she gave that to him and he acknowledged it several times. This live show has a few drawbacks, like the band not being able to keep up with Lady on All of Me, but it's worth the listen. Just wish there was some film of this performance.
