Wake Up Kentucky # 36
Wake Up Kentucky is a radio program that dramatizes health, welfare, and economic issues against the backdrop of the Straight Creek mine explosion in Bell County, Kentucky. On December 26, 1945, between thirty-five and fifty miners were trapped in an explosion at the Kentucky Straight Creek Coal Company. This 15-minute weekly program was produced by Louisville's WHAS and aired on eighteen other stations from 1945 to 1947.
Sponsored by the Committee for Kentucky, the series aimed to raise awareness of the state's social and economic conditions and encourage corrective actions. Through skits and monologues, it addressed various issues such as farming, education, housing, health care, and mine safety. In 1946, WHAS received an Honorable Mention from the Peabody Awards for its impactful programming.
This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.

I would like to hear more of the old programs in this series if possible. In my opinion, this program was very well written. RANDY HOSMAN
