Very good short mystery and well.read by Carolin a reader I have been critical of in the past but has gotten so much better and speeded up her readings. Thanks for a great mystery and great job of narration.

This is a story from Detective Gryce's younger years. It's interesting to have a story where he's still green, and so we get to see how he's grown in contrast with the older, more mature Gryce we know from former stories. There's definitely insight into his character development! It was a good story, although not my favorite. The reader did a good job, focusing specifically on her enunciation of English words, which I appreciate. It made a difference with her accent. Many native English-speaking readers aren't this clear about what they're saying!

You have given me another of your wonderful readings, and, more importantly, given many others the gift of your voice and labor. This sounded more like an Edgar Allen Poe story than what we usually expect from Mrs. Green, and although very sad and tragic, the tale was told well. Her works are superior, in my humble opinion, because they are so believable, and so well constructed. But thanks again to Carolin who deserves much commendation for all she has done for me and for many others in her readings...God bless Librivox.

Interesting plot, too much emotionalism

Well-developed plot but too much extreme emotionalism. AKG has a way of presenting crimes as done by essentially good-hearted people who are pushed to the breaking point by extreme emotional trauma. In my opinion she takes it too far in this story and asks too much of the reader. But that is true of many Victorian novels, and AKG has a fast-paced style in this book that keeps one's attention.

Fan of her mystery stories. This was the only one i found truly disappointing, far fetched, poorly planned and i couldnt wait to finish this. Reader did great though. Would recommend other stories by this author but not this.
