A Small and Difficult Book

(4 stars)

This short work showcases Wharton's talent for describing internal struggles so well that the description can cause great pain. Her books are a huge challenge for modern readers, but well worth the emotional effort. While this book is not as perfect as her later novels, it is still a good experience. Elizabeth Klett is the perfect voice for Edith Wharton. I hope she continues her excellent work.

A thoughtful novella

In order to understand this story, you have to understand that the two parts of the book are depicting two scenes in one woman's life (20 years apart) where she has to face what truth and honesty mean to her, to the people she loves, and to others around her. It's subtle - and I loved the way her inward struggle is described by Wharton. How much do you intervene? Who all will be affected? What decision will they make?

Two women who are superb at what they do: Edith Wharton and Elizabeth Klerk Miss Wharton's writing is always masterful, beautiful and haunting. Miss Klett's reading is perfection, as always. This novella surprised me. I won't say why as it would be a spoiler. It is different and more intimate than her other stories. A true love story. Just delicious! Thank you, Miss Wharton for ALL your stories! I believe I have now read them all. Thank you, Mill Klett, I have more of your readings to go!!!

A man is tempted to take credit of some else's work, as his own. The owner says he could have it as his own. His fiancée is encouraging hgim to do so. He could win the contest which would opeqn so many possibilities. Would it really be wrong?

Nice story and great reader!

I enjoyed the book. Mrs. Klett is such a good voice to listen to. I like how the story infolded and the conscience was put to the test.

Different view into life and love. Well read. There were some challenges regarding thick accents yet THIS DID NOT TAKE AWAY FROM THE OVERALL QUALITY!
