The Zeppelin's Passenger
E. Phillips Oppenheim
Read by Tom Weiss
The Zeppelin’s Passenger is a tale of German espionage in England during World War I. Dreymarsh is a fictional “backwater” area in England with no apparent military value. The story begins with Dreymarsh residents discovering an observation car from a German zeppelin along with a Homburg hat near Dreymarsh. The mystery is further complicated when an Englishman, Mr. Hamar Lessingham, presents himself at Mainsail Haul which is the residence of Sir Henry Cranston. Lessingham bears with him, hand-carried letters from Major Richard Halstead, and a British prisoner of war in Germany. He presents them to Halstead’s sister, Phillipa and Helen, Halstead’s fiancée who have had no word of Richard’s fate and are deeply concerned. Phillipa, Sir Henry’s wife, is smitten with Lessingham, after Sir Henry appears to her to be a coward since he will not become involved in the war effort. Lessingham appears to be the perfect gentlemen but he is not who he pretends to be. Eventually, Phillipa and Helen discover that the delivery of Halstead’s letters come with a price. All becomes clear near the end to discover the secret of Lessingham, Sir Henry, and Mainsail Haul. (Summary by Tom Weiss) (6 hr 38 min)

GREAT YARN!
Avid Listener
A most enjoable romp into a serious subject. WHat else could one want? A master secret service operative, a headstrong wife, a military martinet with the capacity of a Keystone Kop, an outclassed spy who combined the suaveness of James Bond with the instincts of inspector Cluoceau, and a very satisfying ending. ADd the great narration of TW and it is a must read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The narrator is one of the best ...he just becomes the characters. I enjoy WWI era novels, especially when the private lives are mixed, deliberately or accidental, in events with the military. The "when will Germany invade England" question is a constant backdrop. A decent ending. I'd strongly recommend you read.w
Marvelous Melodrama
Renee M.
Highly enjoyable melodrama about espionage and romance during WWI. Plenty of propaganda and obvious plotting, but fun just the same. Cue the dramatic music, put a wrist to your forehead, and enjoy!
Excellent Plot

Spy & Romance story
J11
Liked that it was set during WWI, A spy store with a little mystery & romance over all the stories was OK but a little weak at times. Still fun and entertaining to listen to though. Reader was amazing!
One of my favorite narrators
Ms. Elizabeth
2019 - yearly Oppenheim marathon listen. This story has a bit of the Scarlett Pimpernel feel to it. The chemistry among the characters is interesting and so much fun.

so much better than expected. I found myself pitying both the spy and Sir Henry. Moreover, I despised Phillipe and the Comondant. Even at the conclusion, these feelings were intensified rather than removed.

Always well read, romance, intrigue centres in the outskirts of London in the countryside amongst those of the upper society... Engaging espionage centric story with a twist and great dialogue...
