The Seventh Man by Max Brand, tells part of the story of the larger-than-life western character, Dan Barry, known as “Whistling Dan,” and his alter-ego companions, Black Bart, the wolf-dog, and Satan, the indomitable black stallion. It’s also the story of Kate Cumberland and the incredible five-year-old daughter of Kate and Dan, Joan. We first see Dan as a gentle, caring man with a deep sense of fairness. But then, after six years of a peaceful life in their mountain cabin Dan, more feral than human, sets out to revenge an injustice by killing seven men. Ultimately, it is his devotion to his daughter and Kate’s love for the child that brings about the climax of the tale.
Warning: don’t look for a typical cowboy story here – it’s far deeper and stronger than that. (Summary by Robert Keiper)

Whistin' Dan

(5 stars)

The Seventh Man is the third in a series about Whistlin' Dan, his horse, his dog/wolf and the girl who loves him. Robert Keiper's voice is perfect for the story and conjures up visions of the described desert mountains and rolling plains. A big thank you to Mr Keiper, and....(hint, hint)...I believe there is a fourth book called Dan Barry's Daughter.

Superb

As a minor author myself of Western fiction, I stand in awe of Brand's writing. His character of Dan Barry is both less and more than human. Only a writer of Brand's genius could carry off this story. The reader, btw, is highly professional and convincing. He even does voices for women and little girls.

Insightful

Some might call "Whistling Dan" an animal rights fanatic or even an "eco-terrorist" today because he puts animal life on a par with human life. The Indians play no role in this western, but what drives it is the theme of going native, a civilized man reverting to the wild. Today, we don't understand wildness because civilization has paved it over, but there was a time when it was a struggle to stay civilized....good reader, he doesn't distract from the story. Why is each chapter prefaced....that does distract.

Excellent work Bob, you are a true pro. Please find time to read more westerns, you are the best.

This is the last of three books featuring the character, Dan Barry, by Max Brand. I enjoyed this story in particular. I think I liked the reader of this one. He did a nice job of capturing each character. The plot is straightforward, but the Dan Barry character is finally fully developed in this last book. This book is probably best understood after reading the other Dan Berry books. Max Brand is masterful at describing horses and the bonds between men and horses.

Very well done

This tale kept me listening straight through to the finale, not knowing how or why or when the story could possibly conclude. I have not read the others in Max Brand's "Whistling Dan" series, but he certainly is an interesting character and I look forward now to listening to the others. This reader also did a top notch job; I very much wish he would read more books for Librivox.

WESTERN SCI-FI

(5 stars)

A masterful ending of this brilliant trilogy. Although classified as a "Western," this story is every bit sci-fi as are The Werewolf, Dr. Jeckyl and M. Hyde, or The Invisible Man. Only this tale is superior in style and craft. Mr. Keiper did an excellent read even if all of the cowboys sounded a bit elderly. Please have someone record the fourth book.

this is well done!
