I do not at all recommend this book for children. It was set and written in the late 1800s at a time when slavery was still part of society's consciousness, particularly in the South. I got as far as the third chapter, and couldn't force myself to read on. I guess the culture shock was just too intense, with the attitudes towards African Americans, and the privileged little white girl, who I rather disliked as a main character. And for some reason there were frequent references to whippings. Very odd. Anyhow, I'd only recommend this to older readers who are interested in children's literature of this time. I believe it's important to remember the past, but this is not a book I'd read for pleasure.

What a Delight

I loved the story, it allowed me to feel like I was looking thru a window back in time. I loved the descriptions of all of Beth's relationships with her little friends and family as well as her faithful animal companions. Beautifully written, hope to read more!!!!
