Miss Marjoribanks introduces us to the spirited Lucilla Marjoribanks, a young woman determined to shape her own destiny in the quaint town of Carlingford. With a keen sense of social dynamics and a strategic mind, Lucilla embarks on a mission to elevate her social circle and assert her influence, all while navigating the complexities of romance and friendship.

Set against the backdrop of Victorian society, this novel explores themes of independence and the roles of women in a changing world. Lucilla's character stands out as a proactive force, contrasting with the more passive heroines of her time, and her adventures are laced with humor and keen observations of human nature.

Margaret Oliphant's writing offers a rich tapestry of social commentary and character development, making Miss Marjoribanks a distinctive entry in the realm of humorous fiction. As Lucilla orchestrates her social ambitions, listeners will find themselves drawn into a world where wit and strategy reign supreme.

Reviews

(3 stars)

The first reader has a dry delivery that is well suited to social satire. The rather plaintive tone of the second reader seemed much less apt. I gave up on her rendition after a few chapters.

Well read and cute (feminist?) story

(5 stars)

This cute Story about Lucilla, a very early feminist and Ruler of her town, is well read by the two readers and a pleasure to listen to throughout.

I don’t get it, why is the main character so flat, it’s probably a social commentary but I don’t get it. But great reader

liked it
