This is the first of her two novels. This book explores the societal effects of sex work. Gessia marries a well-off rancher and discovers he previously frequented the local brothel. This leads to arguments throughout the book about the social ramifications of sex work. In the end Gessia, full of shame about her husband’s “impurity,” dies of exhaustion. - Summary by kirk202
