The Damon Runyon Theater
Butch Minds the Baby
by Damon Runyon
The Damon Runyon Theater brings the colorful world of New York’s Broadway underworld to radio, adapting stories by Damon Runyon. Its characters are gamblers, hustlers, show people, and other vivid city dwellers, often speaking in Runyon’s distinctive slang and rhythms.
Each broadcast presents a self-contained dramatic story, with actors bringing Runyon’s sharply drawn characters to life through dialogue, narration, and sound. The series turns the author’s tales into lively radio theater, balancing streetwise humor with sentiment and the occasional touch of danger.
The result is a warm, theatrical portrait of a bustling New York populated by people with big personalities and their own codes of honor. Runyon’s playful language and affection for his outsiders give the stories a distinctive voice, whether they lean toward comedy, romance, or crime.
