In this short survey of French history from the reign of Hugh Capet to the beginning of the sixteenth century, the Anglo-French writer and educator, Gustave Masson, describes how the French monarchy arose from and eventually destroyed the dominance of the feudal nobility. Along the way, there are turbulent vassals and powerful churchmen, strong and weak Kings and Queens, crusades, peasant revolts, arts and letters. And when the Hundred Years War is deadlocked at the siege of Orleans, a peasant girl galvanizes the army and impels the king to reclaim his crown. (Summary by Pamela Nagami, M.D.)
