Beulah
The Bennets
by
Beulah is a domestic radio comedy centered on Beulah Brown, a warmhearted Black housekeeper whose lively personality and opinions make her an engaging presence in the household where she works. The series follows her everyday interactions with the family and the people around them, drawing humor from domestic misunderstandings, relationships, and the contrasts between Beulah’s perspective and those of her employers.
Episodes use a cast of performers and dialogue to bring these household situations to life, with Beulah at the center of the action. The comedy is rooted in character and conversation rather than suspense, offering a light, familiar radio sitcom experience.
The show’s tone is cheerful and affectionate, with Beulah’s confidence and good humor driving its appeal. Its period style reflects the conventions of mid-century radio comedy, including racial stereotypes that may be uncomfortable for modern listeners.
This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.
