Have Gun – Will Travel

The Monster of Moon Ridge

par

Have Gun – Will Travel follows Paladin, a highly educated and impeccably mannered gunfighter who offers his services to people in trouble. Based at San Francisco’s Hotel Carlton, he advertises in the newspaper with the simple message “Have Gun – Will Travel.” His calling card bears a chess knight, a fitting emblem for a man who prefers strategy and negotiation but is prepared to use force when necessary.

Each story sends Paladin beyond the hotel and into a new dispute, often involving danger, injustice, or a clash between personal loyalties and the law. The Western setting provides room for action, but the program also gives attention to the choices behind it: Paladin may have to judge competing claims, defuse a conflict, or decide what kind of help a client truly needs. His exchanges with the hotel’s Chinese proprietor, Hey Boy, add a familiar point of contact amid his travels.

The series combines the suspense of a radio Western with a thoughtful, urbane central character. Paladin’s calm voice and sharp intelligence distinguish him from a conventional frontier hero, while the changing situations keep each assignment fresh. This recording is identified with the episode “The Monster of Moon Ridge.”
