Paul Whiteman Presents

Bert Lahr, the Modernaires

English · Radio, Music

Paul Whiteman Presents is a radio variety program led by bandleader Paul Whiteman. This installment features comedian Bert Lahr and the vocal group the Modernaires, bringing together comedy and popular music in a single broadcast.

Whiteman’s role as a bandleader gives the program a musical center, while the featured performers offer contrasting styles: Lahr is known for his comic stage presence, and the Modernaires for close-harmony singing. The result is a variety-show listening experience built around its named guests and musical entertainment.

With comedy alongside ensemble vocals, the broadcast offers a snapshot of mid-century radio variety, where a bandleader’s program could make room for both a distinctive comic performer and a polished vocal group.

This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.
