Casey, Crime Photographer
Great Grandfather's Rent Receipt
NBC (1947)

Great Grandfather's Rent Receipt may be the worst Casey show ever broadcast. It's about Casey's grandfather back in Ireland with a twist for Halloween. If you're looking for our usual detective story with a murder, a photographer, a bumbling police captain, and a bartender who mangles philosophy or the English language, you're looking in the wrong place this time.
This episode was adapted from a Witch's Tale script, Procrastinatin' Willie's Rent Receipt, originally produced in 1931 and 1935. Cole decided to pull it out and use it for this broadcast, perhaps inspired by the Halloween theme. While it may be a cute story, it is not a true Casey episode and ultimately serves no useful purpose.
In this tale, Casey's great grandfather, Patrick, faces a series of misadventures involving a late rent payment and a ghostly encounter. The story is recounted with elements familiar to Casey fans, but it lacks the usual excitement and intrigue. This episode is often regarded as one of the most forgettable in the series.
