The Fourth Estate (audition)

(5 étoiles; 1 critique)

In the mid-1940s, there was great interest in bringing the drama of the newspaper business to radio. An audition for what would eventually become The Big Story was produced in February 1946. Initially titled "Special Assignment," it dramatized the Joe Majczek case, which would later be featured in The Big Story.

The series, "The Fourth Estate," never made it to the air, but the audition starred Edmond O'Brien and showcased the potential of newspaper stories for radio. The story featured was about Los Angeles Examiner reporter Jack Adams and a counterfeit coins ring he infiltrated. Although it received attention and was accepted by NBC, it ultimately fell through, leading to the choice of Feature Assignment, which was later renamed The Big Story.

Mark Hellinger, a noted journalist and producer, was involved in the project, believing that the newspaper business would provide engaging entertainment. His vision was realized in the success of The Big Story, which became one of radio's most successful franchises.
