Lights, Camera, Kidnap!

Lights, Camera, Kidnap! is a captivating audio-film that delves into the intriguing story of Kim Jung-Il, the son of North Korea's Great Leader, who took charge of the country's film industry in the late 1970s. At just 25 years old, he recognized the potential of cinema as a tool for propaganda while also being a passionate movie enthusiast. Discontent with the poor quality of North Korean films, he concocted a daring plan to kidnap South Korea's renowned film director Shin Sang-Ok and his estranged wife, actress Choi Eun-Hee, to elevate the country's cinematic offerings.

This remarkable narrative unfolds with the kidnapping, failed escape attempts, and the complex relationship that develops between Choi and her captor. It explores themes of love, captivity, and the hidden culture of North Korea, all while showcasing the eccentricities of one of history's most unusual dictators. The story is enriched by material from Paul Fischer's book, A Kim Jong-Il Production, and features songs translated and arranged by Emma Harding.
