Listening To War
Norman Longmate
Read by Sean Arnold
Listening to War takes you back to August 1939, when a diverse group of men and women were brought together at the BBC's Monitoring Service. This fascinating program captures their experiences during a tumultuous time in history.
As they settled into a demanding routine at Wood Norton, near Evesham, the participants shared their thoughts on the atmosphere, describing it as hectic yet cheerful. They reflect on the extraordinary nature of their work, which was both a tremendous professional and human experience.
This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.

I had no idea!

I’ve been interested in WWII all my life, but this was a new bit of knowledge for me! It was especially interesting to hear the stories of some of those directly involved in the program. Gave real flavor of the way people thought about their experiences, reflecting personal and cultural biases, making this a wonderfully unsanitized version of history. Really enjoyed it!
