Wolfman Jack And The Border Blasters

In Search of the Wolf is a captivating exploration of the first pirate radio stations that emerged on the US/Mexico border in the 1950s. This series delves into the fascinating stories of figures like Pappy Lee O'Daniel, who used station XER to sell flour and eventually became a Texas Senator, and the preachers who sold splinters from the cross and signed photographs of Jesus Christ.

The series also highlights the legendary Wolfman Jack, who rose to fame as the first great rock 'n' roll DJ. From his early days as a renegade radio DJ to his memorable appearance in the cult classic film American Graffiti, Wolfman Jack's journey is both entertaining and inspiring. Known for his gravelly voice, he humorously credited it for his success, saying, "It's kept meat and potatoes on the table for years for Wolfman and Wolfwoman. A couple of shots of whiskey helps it. I've got that nice raspy sound."

This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.

The story of a radio legend

(4 stars)

This is a nice 2 part BBC radio documentary about the Mexican radio stars. Pappy O'Daniels, The light crust doughboys, The goat gland doctor all appear. The only omission would be Mother Maybelle and her Carter clan appearing on behalf of the goat gland doctor. This series focuses primarily on Wolfman Jack and his role in Mexican pirate radio and his later move to California radio.
