Mordecai Richler
The Spare Room is a poignant story set during World War II, focusing on a Jewish family in Montreal who takes in boarders. The narrative begins with Heir Banbinger, a refugee awaiting his family's arrival from the old country. As the story unfolds, Mervyn, a struggling writer, also rents the spare room.
Mrs. Hirsh becomes fond of Mervyn and supports his stay despite her husband, Mr. Hirsh, demanding rent. After reading Mervyn's work, Mr. Hirsh changes his perspective and becomes more lenient. He takes Mervyn under his wing, offering fatherly advice and guidance.
