Mrs 'Obbs
by Tom Swain
Mrs 'Obbs is a delightful radio program that showcases the comedic antics of two gossiping women, Mrs 'Obbs and her friend, Mrs Bottomley. The show, which ran for an impressive 1,980 episodes on the Macquarie Network, was a staple of Australian radio in the early forties, often filling the airwaves between 7:15 and 7:30 pm.
Originally inspired by the BBC's Mrs 'Iggs, the series was created by writer Tom Swain after the passing of Athol Tier, who had previously collaborated with English actor Dan Agar. The characters often found themselves at odds with the busybody Mrs Jeffries and the upper-class Mrs Jupley, leading to humorous situations that captivated audiences.
With a rich history and memorable characters, Mrs 'Obbs remains a cherished part of Australia's radio heritage.
