Bessie's Fortune

The coverup of a murder leads to the search for the dead man's heiress decades later in this delightful 3 part novel by Mary Jane Holmes. Her characters are as always very interesting and realistic. Poor little Bessie is raised in poverty because her mother spends most of her time at the gaming tables of Monte Carlo or Baden Baden while her so called aristocratic father looks down on all menial work. Her wealthy relatives will do nothing to help. Add the love of three men for one girl to the mix and the result is an absorbing historical romance. - Summary by Celine Major (15 hr 15 min)

Reviews

Satisfying!

(4.5 stars)

The plot is a bit complicated, but it resolves nicely. Plenty here about the futility of false pride. At first the narrator sounds mechanical, but I encourage listeners to stick with her: by the end of the book, she's practically professional!

A little slow at the begging but the story becomes very engaging once the author finishes laying the groundwork

Great story

(4 stars)

Great story, with a wide variety of characters. Interesting how they end up intermingling with each other, and how they deal with various misfortunes. Romance, jealousy, family secrets, tragedy, ocean voyages, fortunes won and loss, class distinctions, and more. Once again, I love how this author doesn’t stop at the wedding bells, but carries us several years on into several of the characters’ lives.

What a Story!

Thank you so much for reading to me this family tragedy and triumph story! It was so interesting learning about English culture and New English Industrial wealth (and it’s effects on families and neighbors from both sides of The Pond!)

good read

Well intertwined plot with various characters involved in carting it along. A bit of sorrow a bit of romance (some crushed, some tainted) the gives interesting twists . Well worth reading
