The d'Artagnan Romances are six volumes that intertwine exciting events (real and fictionalized) from 17th-century Europe and the life of the most adored French musketeer of that period, Charles de Batz-Castelmore d'Artagnan. Volume 1 introduces d’Artagnan as a young man, seeking to earn the glory of serving in the King’s Musketeers. While in pursuit of this aim, d’Artagnan befriends three musketeers – Athos, Porthos, and Aramis – who aid him in adventures against their King’s adversary, the cunning Cardinal Richelieu. Reviews

Excellent!

(4 stars)

I had long wanted to read this classic and was finally able to by listening to this Librivox version while doing computer work. John Van Stan was an excellent reader and I heartily enjoyed hearing him. There was an occasional interesting French pronunciation or women's voice, but only rarely and as could be expected. Overall, he was an energetic and brilliant reader who made the thrilling novel a pleasure to hear.
