Read beautifully. The story felt much longer than necessary. The main. character, John, acts foolishly regarding his pride & love but it all works out in the end.

This is a fascinating examination of some problems and dilemmas we don't bother about so much these days. The idea of illegitimacy hardly seems to exist (in the West anyway) today and I think I'm right in saying it was more tolerated in the Middle Ages than in Victorian times. Cholmondelle seems ready to dismiss it as a problem too. She wrote good stories and this kept me on tenterhooks till the end. Although I anticipated some events, most were a surprise. As always, I'm enchanted by Simon Evers' reading. There are some very moving episodes and he brings them to life beautifully. And I thank him and Librivox for introducing me to another very enjoyable author.

This is the 3rd Mary Cholmondeley book I’ve read and I’m a faithful fan. To have the book read by Simon Evers adds to the enjoyment. Illegitimacy and heritage are common themes but the author puts a few twists on the subject that make for a very satisfying tale. Thank you Mr. Evers and thank you LibriVox.

Of the three novels available on LibraVox, this is by far the best. She has an ability to describe commonplace things in very uncommonplace, even poetical words. She also weaves very complex webs, and, in this instance, extricated herself beautifully. Need I say again, what are we to do without Simon Evers!?

It's hard to know where to start.... what insight Cholmondeley had. Perfect portrait of a narcissist. Great commentary on faith and the lack of faith that adherence to the law brings. Excellent...just an excellent story. And fantastic reading by SE.
