Bob Bailey Era
tomwsmf
The Bob Bailey era of this show was perhaps some of the best radio drama done. If you listen to the earlier shows you can tell the differnce is writting quality and attention to characters. The week long story arcs done in 15 min segments was brilliant though becuase of the effort required short lived. Those are the shows I treasure form this series the most. Another fact that makes JD a cut above many other OTR series is its bridging from the golden age to the literal end of OTR. Even at the end times JD held togther as a good solid show.
Yours Truly Johnny Dollar: The Perfect Proto-Podcast

Bob Bailey as Johnny Dollar sets the bar for entertaining audio drama - and I say that both for Classic Radio as well as modern podcasts (circa 2022 as I author this review). The production quality and original orchestrations were phenomenal, and it's fun to listen to the cost of items on Johnny's expense report circa the mid 1950s ("roundtrip airfare from Hartford to Los Angeles, $127.00"). Bob Bailey was pitch perfect in the role.
Very good, with some repetition

After listening to the earliest Johnny Dollars, I gavve up on them. They sounded like a second class Philip Marlowe. These Bob Bailey episodes, however, are quite good. The logic of the insurance business gave Johnny Dollar a more realistic basis than most detective stories, and also gave a variety to the cases. If you listen to enough of them, though, you start to hear the same basic plot repeated. Don't let that stop you from listening, just don't be surprised. And I love the theme music that ends each episode - great orchestration, stirring melody. I see hear that there are single segments missing from some 5-parters. That's a shame. Call it 4 1/2 stars for just behind Marlowe and Sam Spade.

IMHO the best detective/drama series, the five part Johnny Dollars with Bob Bailey leave all JD's thirty minute versions and reincarnations sucking road dust. Bob Bailey seems to have found his home in this format, with his other series "Let George Do It" miles behind.
YTJD - The Silver-Blue Matter

In my humble opinion, the 5-part 15 minute episodes of YTJD are the best detective-genre series from OTR. Bob Bailey rocks as Johnny Dollar. This particular episode, The Silver-Blue Matter is a particularly good one, with a juvenile delinquent theme. *****five stars!
Hooray For Mr. Dollar!

Though I liked Mandel Kramer more as Johnny Dollar (it sucks that he was only JD for the last season of the series) But I love all JD though!

I have been listening to Johnny Dollar off and on for a couple of years now. I thoroughly enjoy these episodes. Being a long time radio announcer (35 years), I marvel at what these old radio actors did back then to put these shows on. I can see them in the studio, playing their parts. I also enjoy traveling back to the time when these episodes were on the air. I was very young, so I can’t recall ever listening to this or any other program of this type, being born in 1952, but I really have an appreciation for them. Many thanks for making these programs available

The Old Time Radio Researchers have a comprehensive collection of Johnny Dollar here on the archive. The sound in superior and there are only a few of the 5-parters with one episode missing. To get all of them you have to go to the Zip file page. The singles page doesn't have all of the 5-part series.
