The truth about copyright
Moongleam
Things that received their copyright before 1964 in the USA had to have their copyrights renewed after 28 years. If the copyrights weren't renewed, then they expired. For example, here's the renewal for the copyright on an episode in the first season of the TV show "Father Knows Best": No partiality. By Screen Gems, Inc. Type of Work: Motion Picture Registration Number / Date: RE0000154426 / 1983-01-12 Renewal registration for: LP0000011964 / 1955-03-20 Title: No partiality. By Screen Gems, Inc. Series: Father knows best, no. 25 Copyright Claimant: Robert G. Young & Eugene B. Rodney (PWH) Variant title: No partiality Names: Young, Robert G. Rodney, Eugene B. Screen Gems, Inc. Can anyone show a copyright renewal for this episode of Family Theater? For any episode?
Not in public domain.

Family Theater is a wonderful series. I really like it but I'm sorry to say that it is NOT in public domain. I contacted Family Theater Productions two years ago to check on that point (I wanted to post a number of them on my website) and was informed that they still hold the copyright on all the programs. I was told that they had decided to take the "high road" and not prosecute all the people that are violating their copyright. I thought that was a pretty good position to take for a Christian company. They aren't just talking it, they're walking it. Great series, but again not PD.
Huh? Still copyrighted?

That's just crazy . . What type of gain or advantage is there to sit on a copyright that isn't marketable as it just lays around, but would benifit all parties by being released? While you ponder that, take a look around youtube as many episodes are posted. I'm gonna find a few and put 'em up myself. I vote 5 stars for the progam itself, zip for it's holding company.
