Jerry of The Circus

(5 stars)

This is one of the weekday, afternoon radio programs I listened to in 1951-52 when I was 6 and 7 years old. (That was some 15 years after it was first introduced in 1937. I remember little of it except the acerbic midget Major Mike and know nothing of the actors, who are not named. But listening to it 58 years later, I am amazed at how fast the tempo is, the quality of the acting, and how well it is scripted — not to mention the sound quality that has been maintained after all these years. Whoever wrote it certainly knew about went on behind the circus scenes, especially the art of clowning. Unfortunately, this kind of children's programming faded fast after the coming of television. It is true theater of the mind. Imagining Jerry — a pre-teen orphan with only a dog to his name and being taken in by a circus — I can see how and why I never missed a broadcast. "Jerry of the Circus" indeed is a treasure, though underrated, of the Golden Age of Radio. I give it five stars. Even after 72 years, it speaks to the child in all of us ... or at least the child in me. One thing, however, the brass band at the beginning goes on too long. To avoid it, just move the little ball about a quarter inch to the right. Same at the end: turn it off and go to the next episode. JohnMc

Question About Episodes

(4 stars)

I listened to this series a few times. I thought it was real good. However I would like to know if anybody out there can tell me if episodes #97, #98 might be available, or if somebody might have them. I feel the series would be complete if somebody could steer me to where I might find these episodes. Please send any info on this to dragnetlove@hotmail.com. I give this series a rating of four stars only because of the two missing episodes. Otherwaise, 5 stars easily. Thank you
