From 1848 - 1852, Alfred Russell Wallace travelled in Brazil, exploring the Amazon and Rio Negro rivers and tributaries. During these travels, he collected specimens, especially of insects, birds and other animals, and observed the people and their cultures, as well as the flora, fauna and geography of the region. Having worked as a surveyor, he charted the Rio Negro and Uaupes rivers. Wallace returned to Britain in 1852, but lost most of his notes and collection to a shipboard fire. The final section of "A narrative of...." contains "Remarks on the Vocabularies" written by R.G. Latham, M.D. There is also a long table of vocabularies of various Amazonian languages but this is not included in this recording.
