Still Easy

(5 stars)

Radio's original Madame Malaprop (Jane Ace, whose malaprops were genuine words and not slightly contorted inventions a la Amos 'n' Andy or, later, Duffy's Tavern's Archie) and her cleverly droll husband (Goodman Ace, who also wrote the show singlehanded), in urbane word play, its humour dependent entirely upon characters and conversation (though unafraid to play up the absurdism of daily life and, in its serial style, needle the growing radio soaps gently but firmly). If the word weren't overused, Easy Aces---which originally ran from 1930-45---could still be called sublime even today.

Highly Enjoyable

This is a terrific radio series. During the first 10-15 episodes Mrs. Ace was too dumb and exhausting, but they toned her down and used her ditziness much more wisely.
