Pauline's Passion and Punishment

Gelesen von Elizabeth Klett

(4,054 Sterne; 149 Bewertungen)

Before she wrote Little Women and Little Men, Louisa, writing under the pseudonym A.M. Barnard, had this `blood and thunder' thriller (as she called them) published in 1863 by a weekly pulp magazine. This was during the period when Louisa worked a nurse during the American Civil war. The rigid and unfair roles of men and women of this period, their expectations and desires, plays a large in this story of betrayed love, anger, petulance, and ultimately, vengeance. The story is well written and plotted of course, being an Alcott story, so listeners can expect to enjoy a captivating and satisfying story read to them by one of the best and most highly polished readers around. I didn't like this story.

I'm glad that the story was short, because I kept waiting for something to happen and it never did. This is the first LibriVox.org book that I've listened to that I didn't like.

Ignore Ms Pauline's review. Thankfully, it's not a spoiler because she's wrong.

A bit overly dramatic for me, even a bit Shakespearean. However, it’s a quick read about a game of hearts: One of a stereotypical man who realizes he married the wrong girl and hurts both in the process. Another, I’m sure is not revealing his true orientation due to the times. One woman who is an innocent bystander and one who is hellbent on revenge. Let the games begin. Klett: always amazing.

not a fan of the story. too overdramatic for my taste. it's no wonder LMA wrote these under a pseudonym. excellent job by Elizabeth Klett. although I'm always disappointed when she doesn't get a chance to break out her european accents. :)

I couldn't stop listening

The story builds so well and captives you until the very end. Excellent reading as well.

Love the writer and the reader just not the story.

Revenge is bitter sweet.
