Prodigal Daughters

A frank look at the revolt of the younger generation following World War I, the book follows the Trelawney family. The father looks eagerly forward to his return home after serving an important but harrowing stint in the army. What he finds at home is not what he expects, as his two daughters test the boundaries of new morals, ethics, and dress. Many of the generational and class issues central to the theme continue to resonate in families and society. The book was made into a silent movie starring Gloria Swanson in 1923. The title says it all. During the '20s, society was in upheaval after the horrors of WWI. This book tells of the "rebellion"as a father returns from the war to find his late teen and older daughters in full freedom. The plot revolves around the outcome of the clash between Pop and his "children." I wished for a better plot and one more suited to later times. The reader does an okay job, but her slow pace makes it harder to stick with the very 'talky' story.

This Libri Box volunteer is terrific, however, the novel is redundant, obtuse and wholly unartful, especially for the time it was written.
Ridge Runner
Talk about preachy and wrong headed! Whew! Times have changed, thank goodness.
