This classic tale tells of an orphan, Pip, who through a series of strange circumstances first finds a trade as a blacksmith's apprentice and then learns that he has "great expectations" of a future inheritance from an anonymous benefactor. He soon learns to live the profligate life of a gentleman as he gradually sheds his associations with the gentle souls of his past, Joe (the blacksmith) and Biddy (a level-headed young lady). He throws his money at improving the prospects of his roommate and friend Herbert and his heart at an "ice princess" whose heart will never respond. But then an escaped convict from his distant past comes calling, and all Pip's hopes dissolve. (Summary by Mark F. Smith) (20 hr 26 min)

Excellent!

(5 stars)

This is my second time listening to this audio recording and I think Mark Smith does an excellent job. He enunciates all his words and is very clear and easy to understand. He also does a great job bringing the characters to life by giving them each their very own distinct voice. Very well done!

Superb

This is a great book, it has a good amount of humor, mixed with an interesting plot, and melancholy approaches to issues of the times. The recording itself is very well done, but not perfect. His voices are great (although Joe sounds a bit too similar to Goofy for me), but there are echoes in some of the tracks, and a mechanical scratching which can be a bit of a headache. Besides these flaws, it was a wonderful listen.

Great Expectations

This reading is a great modern adaptation of this classic book. Mr. Mark Smith captures the essence of Pip, the innocent youth who matures throughout the book and becomes a much better person despite the obstacles in his path. He gains insight, kindness, a sense of justice, and a social conscience! All the while retaining his American English accent, which will attract American youth! Great job, Mr. Smith!

Great audiobook

I wanted to read a "classic" in English so I chose this one. Even though I found the novel quite long sometimes, I am 2/3 through it now I really appreciate it so far. The reader is amazing he gives life to the different characters of the novel, best reading I've listened to !

Awesome

I wish more people would read classics like these because they are amazing! I was a little scared of this book becaus3 I just have gotten into classics and it is my first Dickens but this book was amazing. I would also highly recommend listening to it. This is a great book I will always come back to!!!

A Timeless Classic Brilliantly Read

This is one of those literary classics we all should have read in high school - but didn’t. Enough said. This version is noteworthy by how well it is read. The text is clear and accurate but when the characters speak Smith gives unique voices to each. He’s really good. Its like being at a live performance. Highly recommend...

Perfectly voiced

Mark does an amazing job reading this book. I listened to it twice back-to-back and loved every moment. I would love for Mark to read The Catcher In The Rye or The Chocolate War or the great Day Bradbury's poetic prose Dandelion Wine and Something Wicked This Way Comes. None of those are in the public domain unfortunately. Keep reading, man

The reader is a very skilled, his voice sounds like Mr. Joe to me and I look forward to listening some of the other books he has narrated. The book is a really good one, although the storyline gets very complex at some point it becomes very com
