Clara, Lu, and Em

C l ara, Lu, and Em (sometimes Clara, Lu, 'n Em ) is considered to be the first daytime serial (soap opera) broadcast over a radio network. The program featured college friends Louise Starkey, Helen King, and Isobel Carothers. Its first daytime network broadcast was in February 1932, but it had beginnings as a local program in Chicago in 1930 and a nighttime program on NBC Blue in 1931 until 1936 at various times with occasional hiatuses. It returned to a once-weekly evening program shortly thereafter, but went off the air when Carothers died unexpectedly. They decided to end the program. It returned in 1942 for a brief run, and then returned for brief syndication in 1945. The program is believed to be the first serial to offer a premium, sending a 1933 Chicago World's Fair collectible spoon to those who mailed in a Super Suds box top. A .zip file of the raw, unprocessed recordings in WAV format has been added to this page. It can be downloaded in the box to the right (listing the different file formats and download selections) or by using this direct link https://archive.org/download/ClaraLuEmJHMC/ClaraLuEmRAW-WAVs.zip * * * Joe Hehn (1931-2020) was a pioneering collector of radio recordings when the hobby emerged in the 1960s. The Joe Hehn Memorial Collection is comprised of many recordings and documents. The latter include scripts, program documentation, catalogs of fellow collectors, and old time radio fanzines of the period. These documents are being scanned into Adobe Acrobat PDF files. Digitizing his collection of reel tapes and discs is the effort of a wide range of North American volunteers, and includes assistance of some international collectors. The groups supporting this effort with their funds, time, technology and skills are the Old Time Radio Researchers and a small group of transcription disc preservationists who refer to themselves as the "The Knights of the Turning Table.

This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.

The Joe Hehn Collection

Okay, I've listened to many of the files in the Joe Hehn collection. This is an admirable project, but I have to say, you're doing these shows a great disservice by not making a raw file available, in addition to a flac and an mp3. Too many of these shows have been cleaned with far too heavy a hand on the noise reduction, leaving thiem with unacceptable digital artifacts. Personally, I find a raw file easier to listen to than one ruined by ham-fisted cleaning. You'd be doing some of us a huge favor by making it possible for us to download a raw file. As it is, there are far too many shows in this collection I just can't listen to.

ZIP file of raw WAVs has been posted for these recordings

These are now on this Clara, Lu, and Em page, or download using this direct link. https://archive.org/download/ClaraLuEmJHMC/ClaraLuEmRAW-WAVs.zip Your assistance in improving the final recordings that would be greatly appreciated. We can use more volunteer help in the project as we are still more recordings to be transferred.
