Two Historic Radio Dramas

(5 stars; 4 reviews)

Two Historic Radio Dramas features a celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the first BBC radio drama. This collection includes a recreation of an evening of plays from 1924, showcasing works such as The Blacksmith's Serenade by Vachell Lindsay and a scene from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.

The second part of the program presents The Mystery by Bill Naughton, which won the 1974 Italia Prize for Radio Drama. This engaging story revolves around Edward Grock, a writer navigating the complexities of marriage and pet ownership.

CURIOUS

You need to sit through 10+ minutes of self-congratulatory interview with an old gaffer bragging about having written the first screen-play without reference to visuals (i.e., a RADIO PLAY?!), & more guff about being the first to ask the listener to turn their lights off. Wyllis Cooper, in 1933 wrote "Lights Off" for American Radio, & may have not been the first to employ this cheap gimmick, but I wish they'd just get to the core material!
