The Clock (US)
The Joe Hehn Memorial Collection
The Clock is a drama anthology series that ran on ABC from 1946 to 1948. The program was narrated by "Father Time". The creator and writer of the series was Lawrence Klee, who worked for the Hummerts ( Mr. Keen, Tracer of Lost Persons and others), and for ABC ( The Fat Man ). Production was in New York when the series began. When William Spier had a dispute with CBS over the direction of Suspense and its new hour-long format, ABC asked him to take over The Clock to boost its ratings and draw a sponsor. Starting with the 1948-03-04 episode, the show shifted to Hollywood and had many of the same actors who performed on Suspense . As a cynical nudge to CBS, the closing credits of The Clock suddenly included "produced and directed by William Spier, the master of suspense "! No sponsor came forward, and the series was cancelled. Spier returned to Suspense as producer for one more year after Anton Leader's contract was not renewed, and devoted his future efforts to movies and television. The US series was known for good scripts. New productions of them were recorded in Australia by Grace Gibson Productions and were syndicated around the world beginning in 1955, including the USA. * * * These recordings are part of the Joe Hehn Memorial Collection. Mr. Hehn (1931-2020) was a pioneering collector of radio recordings when the hobby emerged in the 1960s. Digitizing his collection of reel tapes and discs is the effort of a wide range of North American volunteers, and includes assistance of some international collectors. The groups supporting this effort with their funds, time, technology and skills are the Old Time Radio Researchers and a small group of transcription disc preservationists who refer to themselves as the "The Knights of the Turning Table."
