that Sergeant X was Howard Duff, who later played Sam Spade on radio.

Wonderful addition to the archive. Thanks jtyroler for being right there with the answer when I wondered why the episode THE WALKING SKULL was called MYSTERY PLAYHOUSE by a host calling himself Sergeant X, who takes us to a crypt-like place (no creaky door tho) where we are told we'll meet someone who likes to tell creepy stories; who turns out to be our Raymond of Inner Sanctum. There is an afr tag which could have tipped me off but it's nice knowing the real history of what we are listening to. I love knowing our troops and allies had this kind of entertainment when it was needed most. Excellent show by the way. NB: Raymond seems to admit to being undead in the intro of which I speak. Should I have picked up on that from hearing a dozen our so of his scripts? Or did I make a research find? Ha. With all you observant readers, I doubt that. Happy reading...highest rec

This was an Armed Forces Radio program where they took various other shows, such as Inner Sanctum or Crime Club programs, had them introduced by someone going by the name of Sgt. X, T4Y, or the actor Peter Lorre, usually with the greetings of "Hello creeps." Because it was an Armed Forces program, any ads for products were eliminated. At the end of each program, you'd be taken to "The Green Room" where they would play clips from the next program.
There’s also this great episode

“Those Who Walk in Darkness” starring Boris Karloff opens The Best of the Radio Shows, an album on Apple Music featuring Karloff. The story and its production are extremely creepy, and I’ve never heard (or seen!) Karloff quite as subtle or effectively restrained. He somehow resists the opportunity to go full throttle, and his underplaying made my hair stand up. First class funny and chilling entertainment for our armed forces in WWII. Give a listen and time travel back there. Peter Lorre ... the more I hear and see about him the more I admire him. Our gain was the Nazis loss!l.
