Also published under the title The Tragedy of the Korosko (1898). A group of European tourists are enjoying their trip to Egypt in the year 1895. They are sailing up the River Nile in a "a turtle-bottomed, round-bowed stern-wheeler", the Korosko. They intend to travel to Abousir at the southern frontier of Egypt, after which the Dervish country starts. They are attacked and abducted by a marauding band of Dervish warriors. The novel contains a strong defence of British Imperialism and in particular the Imperial project in North Africa. ACD can be an entertaining storyteller. David Wales has the perfect pace for a Doyle work. The synopsis refers to the existence of an inherent European distrust of Islam during this period of time. May I say that this distrust exists even until today and is, in fact, worldwide; history proves the wisdom of this mistrust!

Really enjoyed this novel and it's exploration of a mixed bunch of characters placed under extreme conditions of danger. There is great juxtaposition of culture as the rich and seemingly entitled are matched against marauding desert dervishers. As always, ACD provides great character development and in this case hidtoricsl insight into 19 Century Egypt brought to life by his descriptive talents. Chapeau to the narrator also who did a great job.

ACD has further demonstrated his ability to give depth in character through this exciting story. It is quite close in relation to time to nowadays and we can relate to it, perhaps a little more than some of ACD’s other books, and I have found that this gives me considerably more understanding on events that have been occurring around that region recently. Well read!😊👍
