William Shakespeare The Moor of Venice

(2.5 stars; 3 reviews)

William Shakespeare's tragedy, Othello, revolves around the title character and his passionate love for Desdemona, the daughter of a Venetian senator. Othello, a Moor and valiant army general, has proven exceptional military abilities in the service of Venice. However, his life faces ruin when he falls victim to the conniving tricks of his ensign, Iago, who is angered by not receiving a promotion.

Through deceit, Iago weaves a web of false accusations and miscommunications that undermine Othello's love. Tricked into believing that Desdemona has been unfaithful, Othello's confidence in her erodes, leading him down a torturous path of jealousy and doubt. Despite Desdemona's innocence, the evidence fabricated by Iago drives Othello to a tragic conclusion.

In a desperate act, Othello smothers Desdemona, only to realize too late that he has been misled. The play concludes with the unmasking of Iago and his punishment for the heinous crimes he has committed.
