Trial By Laughter Ian Hislop & Nick Newman
Ian Hislop and Nick Newman
Trial by Laughter is a comedy drama by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman, based on real trial transcripts. It tells the story of William Hone, a forgotten hero of free speech in Britain, who stood trial in 1817 for 'impious blasphemy and seditious libel'. His crime? Being funny, particularly through parodying religious texts and critiquing the despotic government and the libidinous monarchy.
The drama features a talented cast including Robert Wilfort as the Prince Regent, Arthur Bostrom as Cruikshank, and Jonathan Keeble as Ellenborough, among others. Original music is composed by Conrad Nelson, and the production is directed by Gary Brown.
